BANK LINE STIMMER "SALAMIS"

We have just been advised this morning by the Bank Line; Ltd. that their steamer "Salamis" has been requieitioned by the British Government, and we shall be much obliged if your Committee can see their way to make representations to London regarding the matter without delay. We should not like to be thought unpatriotic in suggesting this course, but the following facts will reveal to you how important it is that this steamer should be left on her regular berth in the interests of British trade.

The .. 'Salamis" is the only British ship now trading from Hongkong to South Africa, and if this trade is left without a

British steamer the business will be transferred to Japanese Steam- ship Companies (who are already competing), and it will be extremely difficult to recover the trade for British Bottome.

Your Committee are no doubt aware that one of the chief

aima of Japanese Steamship cenere is to transfer as much business as

possible into Japanese merchants' hands, sc that the result of this

ship being taken off the berth will not only be a loss to the

British Steamship Company concerned, but also to ourselves and other

British traders, because much of the existing trade will sooner or

later get into Japanese hands in view of the methods their steamship

companies employ, as set forth above.

We need hardly ask you to keep this letter confidential

because it is absolutely necessary in our own interest at the

present time to use Japanese ateemers (owing to lack of British)

and we do not desire to prejudice dur interests.
